Even though you have taken every possible precaution against tooth decay, it can be frustrating and disheartening to find you have a decayed tooth; however, you should know that many more people face this situation than you might think. You can choose to ignore your decayed teeth as long as they do not cause much pain or interfere with your daily life; however, it is also a fact that by choosing this approach you do yourself more harm than good.

What Is Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay, in its simplest definition, is a hole that forms in a tooth. Tooth decay starts out very small and grows over time, especially when it is not treated, so that the area it covers increases. Because many cavities do not cause pain at first, it is almost impossible to diagnose and treat them early. The only way to get early treatment for tooth decay is to go to the dentist regularly.

According to various studies, tooth decay is one of the most common health problems in the world. Anyone with a tooth can suffer from decay; that includes children and animals.

What Causes Tooth Decay?

A layer of plaque formed by bacteria, saliva, acids and food residue

Eating too many sugary and acidic foods and drinks

Wrong and incomplete oral care, poor tooth-brushing habits and not using dental floss

Insufficient fluoride intake

A dry mouth

Eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia

Reflux disease, which causes stomach acid to weaken the tooth enamel

What Are the Symptoms of Tooth Decay?

Tooth sensitivity

Toothache

A hole in the tooth that is visible to the naked eye

Black or white spots on the teeth

What Are the Treatment Methods for Tooth Decay?

Many different approaches and techniques can be used among the treatments for tooth decay. Before starting any treatment, you should be examined by a dentist and tell them all of your symptoms in full. After you have described all the symptoms, such as pain or aching, your dentist will determine exactly what type of decay you have, establish its severity and extent, and begin drawing up a treatment plan accordingly. Although it is possible to detect tooth decay simply by examining the mouth, dental X-rays may be needed to detect some decay accurately.

The treatment method chosen for tooth decay will mainly depend on the severity of the decay and the level of complications. The most common methods used to treat tooth decay are as follows:

Filling Treatment for Tooth Decay

When it comes to treating decay, the first method that comes to mind is filling treatment. Your dentist will first clean the decayed area of your tooth with a dental drill. Once the decay has been removed, they will fill the empty part with composite material. This method is generally preferred for simple decay that is detected early.

Crown Treatment

Crowns are preferred in the treatment of moderate and severe decay. In such cases, the dentist may choose to place a specially made cap on the tooth, so that the tooth's original covering is replaced with a "crown". Of course, before starting the procedure, the decayed part of the tooth must be completely removed.

Root Canal Treatment for Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is a dental problem that can also be treated with root canal treatment. When the decay has progressed so far that the nerves in the tooth die, your dentist will turn to root canal treatment to preserve the root of the tooth. First, the nerves are removed, then the inside of the tooth is disinfected and cleaned, and once all the infection has been eliminated, all the gaps are sealed with filling material. It is also possible to place a crown over the filling where necessary.

Treatment of Early Tooth Decay

Tooth decay can be removed with treatment methods other than fillings. If your tooth decay is detected in the early stages, it may be possible to get rid of it with simple fluoride treatment.

How to Cope with Decay Pain?

When a decayed tooth is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is, of course, constant pain and aching. The pain caused by tooth decay can be at a level that deprives patients of their daily comfort, or it can be severe enough to make them lose motivation and concentration at work and with family and friends. There are things you can do yourself to cope with decay pain. Here are some of them:

Carry out your daily oral and dental care more carefully. If necessary, brush your teeth 3 times a day and clean the decayed teeth with a toothpaste with a high fluoride content.

Consult your dentist or pharmacist and try painkillers that are especially helpful for toothache.

Watch what you eat; avoid very hot and cold foods.

It is worth stressing that these recommendations are purely temporary measures and that the pain of tooth decay can only be relieved permanently by treating the decay.

To Prevent the Risks of Tooth Decay…

Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.

Use dental floss regularly.

Eat fewer sugary and acidic foods.

Cut down on snacks between meals.

Go to the dentist regularly.
