What Is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed in the jawbone to restore the function and appearance of missing teeth, and are made from a material compatible with human tissue. They are screw-shaped structures produced in different sizes and diameters, designed to imitate tooth roots, mainly made of titanium with improved surface properties.

How Does the Dental Implant Treatment Process Work?

Dental implant treatment is carried out in two stages. The first stage is the preparation of a socket suited to the length and diameter of the implant chosen for the area where it will be placed, in the correct position and at the ideal angle, without damaging the adjacent teeth, soft tissues and other anatomical structures, and immediately afterwards the implant is placed in the socket. Once the implant has been placed in the bone, the healing process needed for it to become part of the body and fuse with the bone begins. This process takes about 3 months, but in some cases it may be shorter or longer. When the waiting period ends, the second stage begins: making the prostheses on the implants, as intended and planned at the start of treatment. This stage takes between 2 days and 2 weeks, depending on the type of prosthesis to be made.

Can Dental Implant Treatment Be Applied to Everyone?

Dental implants can be applied to anyone whose jaw development is complete and who has no health problems, where the jawbone has sufficient volume, and even where it does not, by using advanced surgical techniques. If the amount of bone for implant treatment is sufficient in the missing tooth area, the patient's current oral health and the patient's habits (smoking, alcohol consumption, teeth clenching and so on) are evaluated. In addition, for the treatment to succeed, the patient's systemic condition must be assessed very carefully when planning the treatment. If there is uncontrolled diabetes, diseases related to bone metabolism, cardiovascular diseases, clotting disorders, or previous chemotherapy or radiotherapy, the patient must obtain a written opinion from their treating doctor.

Is It a Difficult and Painful Treatment?

Patients are extremely worried about the surgical phase of implant treatment. It is fair to say that every patient having an implant has had a tooth extracted in the past, and they are stressed because they compare this procedure to an extraction. However, placing a dental implant is a simpler, painless and more comfortable procedure for the patient than a tooth extraction. The process is completed in about 10 minutes. If the patient follows the doctor's recommendations after the procedure and takes the prescribed medication correctly, they will have no problems. The prosthesis part, which is the second stage of the treatment, is almost the same as normal prosthesis procedures and is trouble-free for the patient. If preferred, the patient can also use temporary prostheses for function between the 2 stages.

Where and How Should Dental Implant Treatment Be Carried Out?

Since placing dental implants is a surgical procedure, it is advisable for it to be carried out by a maxillofacial surgeon if possible. The approaches and experience of a doctor who specialises in this field before, during and after the procedure will give more positive results for the patient. The environment where the treatment is carried out must be a sterile environment suited to the requirements of surgery. The sterility and suitability of all the materials to be used are the doctor's responsibility. It is important to have auxiliary staff who are competent in their work, as well as a suitable doctor and environment.

Is It Possible for Dental Implants to Be Rejected by the Body?

The process of titanium dental implants fusing with the bone and becoming part of the body works through a mechanism very different from that of living organ transplants. For this reason, conditions such as tissue incompatibility and blood incompatibility do not apply to this treatment method, and there is no need for special tests before the procedure. What is popularly described as the rejection of dental implants by the body has no proven scientific basis. Likewise, no published scientific study indicates that the titanium used in the production of dental implants causes an allergic reaction or causes other diseases.

In What Situation Can Treatment Fail?

Dental implant failure means that the implants fail to integrate with the bone after being placed. Among the causes of unsuccessful treatments are cases where infections occur around the implants because the patient did not pay attention to their doctor's recommendations after the procedure. This is followed by incorrect treatment planning and inadequate surgical technique. To summarise briefly: according to the results of scientific studies carried out on the subject for more than 30 years, the success of dental implants is reported at between 90 and 98%, taking various conditions and brands into account. In other words, when the appropriate conditions are met and the correct treatment process is followed, dental implant failure is almost non-existent.

Can All Tooth Loss Be Treated with Dental Implants?

Dental implants can treat the loss of one or more teeth, and it is also possible to plan treatment with dental implants in cases where the patient has lost all their teeth. In a patient who has lost all their teeth, the necessary area can be prepared for a fixed prosthesis by placing 8 implants in the jaw. The number of implants to be placed can vary from patient to patient. However, dental implants can also be used to provide retention. In patients with significant bone loss who are afraid of advanced surgical procedures, 2 or 4 implants can be placed in a jaw and removable prostheses can be made on these implants. The aim of this treatment option is to improve the patient's quality of life with aesthetic prostheses that do not move during function.
