Teeth whose shape and natural colour have changed can be covered. According to one study, 99 per cent of dentists use zirconia crowns to restore teeth naturally. This crystalline material is preferred over other crown materials because of its durability.

A zirconia crown offers the gum and biological compatibility closest to that of a natural tooth. It can be used even for patients who are allergic to the metal substructure under porcelain crowns. A zirconia crown is a restoration that covers the tooth when your teeth have serious problems or are poor in appearance. Zirconia crowns are a good treatment for severe tooth decay, bad discolouration and fractures in natural teeth. There are many materials other than zirconia. The most commonly used types of material are porcelain, composites and metal-reinforced ceramics. Zirconia is preferred over the others because of its many advantages.

Reasons for Having a Veneer

Many causes can wear down or break your teeth. Tooth decay, injuries and problems that come with age are among the main causes of tooth loss. Grinding your teeth, bite disorders and chewing hard materials can change the shape of your teeth or make them shorter. However, we should not forget that having a zirconia crown will not help to restore the health of your natural teeth. By preventing further decay, though, it prevents loss of material and protects the teeth while providing an attractive appearance. A dental crown is the preferred option for correcting many oral problems. The most common areas of use are:

To stop cracks in teeth from spreading,

To protect a weakened tooth and hold it together,

To restore broken or worn teeth,

To strengthen chewing by correcting the bite,

To stop teeth with large fillings from breaking and losing more material.

What Are the Advantages?

Zirconia is the most durable biocompatible ceramic, and it is made without the use of additional materials. Compared with glass ceramics and dental composites, it is more fracture-resistant, harder and stronger. These features prevent cracking and chipping in both the surrounding teeth and the tooth beneath the crown. Zirconia has better protective ability and can cope with high loads without compromising the integrity of your smile.

How Long Does It Last?

Zirconia crowns last from five to fifteen years when looked after carefully and correctly. Of course, the lifespan of the crown will depend on the cleanliness of your mouth as well as your personal habits. For example, if you grind your teeth while you sleep, you may need to have yours replaced sooner than someone who does not. Other things that will shorten the life of a zirconia crown are:

Chewing ice

Opening packaging with your teeth

Biting your nails

More Wear-Resistant Than Other Porcelain

It is aesthetic because it covers misshapen and distorted teeth. A newer material for dental restoration treatments, zirconia is a type of ceramic that is stronger than porcelain and some metal alloys. More precisely, it is zirconium oxide, and it forms fewer sharp edges because of the natural "wear and tear" that happens over time. Zirconia crowns tend to cause less stress and damage than porcelain crowns. In addition, porcelain can act like sandpaper when it rubs against your other teeth, causing the enamel to wear away. All-ceramic materials do not require any unsightly metal substructures for stability, and they are also wear-resistant and hard to break. One study revealed that 99 per cent of dentists use this crystalline material to restore teeth naturally. They said that zirconia has many advantages beyond smoothness.

Low Chance of Reaction

Crowns made of zirconia have become more common and offer some advantages:

A strong material

Zirconia is known for its strength and durability. Consider how much force your back teeth put on the food you chew. This is why your crowns need to be made of a strong material. Zirconia can be a good choice for crowns at the back of your mouth. In addition, because zirconia is so strong, your dentist will not have to do much preparation of your teeth. Crowns made of zirconia have proved as successful as metal crowns over 5 years. Crowns made entirely of zirconia, called monolithic crowns, are especially durable.

Biocompatibility

Zirconia is the choice of many dentists because of its biocompatibility. This means it is less likely to trigger a reaction or an immune response in the body, such as inflammation. Research confirms this.

Important for Health

Most patients who need a crown can benefit from the new restoration. A crown not only improves the appearance of your smile but also helps your overall dental health. Zirconia crowns were first introduced into dentistry in 2010. The raw material is supplied to the dental laboratory as compressed solid blocks. These blocks are then milled into a three-dimensional crown or framework using CAD/CAM manufacturing, which provides a restoration that is gap-free and fits well every time. No metals are involved in this process. This makes it possible to obtain pleasing, aesthetic crown margins without dark lines or visible shadows.
