What You Need to Know About Porcelain Veneers

What Is a Dental Veneer?

A veneer is a type of aesthetic covering applied to correct situations that can negatively affect both the smile and the person's self-confidence, such as crooked teeth, discolouration and tooth fractures. Two different materials can be used for veneers. In this article, we will talk about porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers can be used to correct the following conditions:

  • Tooth discolouration or staining: porcelain veneers can restore the natural whiteness of the teeth or provide the desired shade.
  • Irregularities in the shape and size of the teeth: porcelain veneers can be used to correct the shape of the teeth, close small gaps between the teeth or improve the proportions of the teeth.
  • Broken or cracked teeth: porcelain veneers cover broken or cracked teeth, improving the aesthetic appearance and increasing the durability of the tooth.
  • Tooth alignment: slight gaps between the teeth or overlapping can be corrected with porcelain veneers.

In which cases should a porcelain veneer not be applied?

  • Lack of tooth enamel
  • Lack of good oral hygiene
  • Gum problems
  • Bite disorders
  • Excessive degree of tooth misalignment
  • Habits such as clenching, grinding, and chewing or breaking hard objects

Is the tooth surface cut down for porcelain veneers?

How much of the tooth surface is cut is determined according to the patient's needs.

Excessive tooth discolouration, overlapping, and large, long teeth: these are the conditions in which some tooth reduction must be carried out.

The veneer can be applied without any tooth reduction in cases such as teeth positioned further back, small teeth, slight discolouration or preserving the existing shade, and gaps between the teeth.

What should you look out for after porcelain veneers are applied?

  • Pay attention to oral hygiene: keep up the habit of brushing at least twice a day, flossing and using mouthwash.
  • Visit your dentist for regular check-ups: your dentist will assess the condition of the veneers, clean them and, if necessary, quickly detect and treat any problem.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods: porcelain veneers are durable, but excessively hard or sticky foods can damage the teeth and increase the risk of the veneers cracking or breaking.
  • Keep teeth grinding or clenching habits under control: grinding or clenching your teeth can damage porcelain veneers. If you have such a habit, talk to your dentist and take the necessary precautions.
  • Beware of violent impacts: consider wearing a mouthguard, especially if you play sports or do activities that could seriously injure your teeth or jaw.
  • Do not clench or bite down on your teeth frequently: clenching or biting down on pencils, fingernails or similar objects can damage the veneers.
  • Do not smoke and limit your alcohol consumption: smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can discolour or stain porcelain veneers. You can protect your veneers by avoiding them.

Following your dentist's recommendations and maintaining regular oral and dental care after your porcelain veneers are completed will help you achieve a lasting, healthy result.

Do porcelain veneers have a limited lifespan?

Since every patient's condition is different, the lifespan of porcelain veneers may vary from person to person. Your dentist will take these factors into account to determine the most suitable treatment option for you and assess the durability of the veneers.
