A panoramic X-ray is an X-ray technique used to take a detailed image of the teeth and jaw bones. Dentists use this technique to diagnose, treat and monitor dental and maxillofacial conditions.

Panoramic X-rays give a wide view, which is needed in many situations in dentistry, such as determining the exact position of the teeth and planning dental treatment. It is also possible to assess the condition of the jaws and sinuses. A panoramic X-ray covers a wider area than conventional X-ray images and is used by the dentist for the early diagnosis and treatment of dental and jaw conditions.

How Is a Panoramic X-Ray Taken?

It is taken at the dentist's surgery and takes only a few minutes. The person bites on a mouthpiece positioned beneath the X-ray machine, and as the machine makes a turn around the head, it slowly takes one large image of the jaw and teeth. Metal objects in the mouth can be removed so that the person's teeth and tongue are not exposed to the X-rays.

The dentist gives advice so that the person feels comfortable and at ease during the panoramic X-ray. The results can be obtained immediately and are given to the person after the dentist has interpreted them.

What Are the Advantages of a Panoramic X-Ray?

A panoramic X-ray has many advantages:

A large image: It shows all of the teeth and jaw bones and allows a dentist to make a complete diagnosis of dental and jaw conditions.

Early diagnosis: It allows dental and maxillofacial conditions to be diagnosed early, which makes them easier to treat.

An effective treatment plan: It allows the dentist to draw up the treatment plan more effectively and accurately.

Convenient and quick: Taking the image is easy, quick and comfortable, and takes only a few minutes.

Low-level radiation: It delivers lower levels of radiation than other X-ray techniques and poses no risk to the person's health.

The panoramic X-ray is a very useful technique for diagnosing, treating and monitoring dental and jaw conditions, and it is frequently used in dentistry.

When Should a Panoramic X-Ray Be Taken?

It is taken to give a general view of dental and jaw health. This type of X-ray can show all of the teeth and jaw bones and reveal conditions affecting the gums, braces, implants, sinus cavities and missing teeth. The dentist can use these images to plan a treatment or evaluate a treatment in progress. Panoramic X-rays can also be taken to follow up on tooth and jaw problems identified by the dentist.

Is Any Pain Felt While a Panoramic X-Ray Is Taken?

Usually, no pain is felt while it is taken. You may feel only some pressure or discomfort while the X-ray machine is running, but this is brief and does not cause pain. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, your dentist may recommend a suitable anaesthetic. Panoramic X-rays are a safe and quick method and provide important information about dental and jaw health.

Are Panoramic X-Rays Harmful?

It is a safe method when used correctly. The X-ray doses used in dentistry are much lower than the doses given by the standard X-ray machines used in radiology. However, continuous or excessive exposure to radiation can potentially be harmful and damage the cells of your body. A panoramic X-ray should therefore be taken only when necessary and at the intervals set by the dentist. In addition, the dentist may recommend a different method for particular cases, such as pregnant women.
