Implants are artificial titanium tooth roots placed in the jawbone to replace teeth lost for various reasons.
Implants offer better speech and chewing function than crowns and conventional dentures, while giving your face a natural appearance.
The implant is a comfortable and reliable treatment. The operation can be carried out under local anaesthetic without pain or discomfort. A general anaesthetic can also be given if necessary. However, it should not be forgotten that healthy gums and sufficient bone structure to support the implant are essential for implant placement.
Dental implants are made of titanium. Good implants use titanium of around 99% purity, and they are more expensive than other brands, mainly because of the effort needed to create a suitable surface to which bone tissue bonds.
Is implant treatment a comfortable and safe procedure?
Implant treatment is a safe and comfortable procedure as long as it is carried out in a sterile environment by an expert team.
Implant treatment has two stages: the surgical procedure and the fitting of the prosthesis.
Who can have an implant?
The success of implant treatment depends on the structure of the jaw and the suitability of the jawbone. In patients who do not have sufficient bone density, implant operations are carried out by applying artificial bone powder to the areas where the density is low.
There is no upper age limit for implant treatment, and it can be given to all patients over 18, that is, those whose bone development is complete.
In addition, people with uncontrolled diabetes, blood pressure problems, blood clotting problems and advanced heart disease are not given implants without their doctor's permission.
Is pain felt during the implant operation?
During the implant operation, the patient feels neither pain nor discomfort thanks to the local anaesthetic given in the mouth. Any pain that may be felt after the operation can be relieved with an ordinary everyday painkiller.
How long does it take to place the implants in the mouth?
The length of the implant operation varies with the number of implants to be placed in the mouth, but the time to place one implant is about 5 to 10 minutes.
Can implants be placed immediately after a tooth extraction?
There are two different approaches to this. If there is no inflammation or defect at the extraction site, an implant can be placed in that area immediately. If there is a defect at the extraction site, however, artificial bone powder must be applied to that area and you need to wait about two months for the extraction site to heal.
How long do you need to wait for the prostheses to be fitted after the implants are placed?
After the implant operation, you need to wait 2 to 6 months for the implant to fuse with the jawbone.
What are the benefits of implant treatment?
The prostheses made after an implant is placed form the structure closest to a natural tooth.
They offer better chewing and speech function than traditional prostheses.
They look more aesthetic than other prostheses.
Thanks to implants, missing teeth can be replaced without touching the healthy teeth next to them.
They increase the retention of complete dentures. Lower complete dentures in particular hold very poorly, so even if the patient does not have enough bone, retention is increased by placing 2 implants in the lower jaw.
How long does a dental implant last?
Implants have been observed to last a lifetime without any problems. However, many factors influence how long implants last. The most important of these is how much attention the patient pays to oral hygiene.
How do you care for and clean implants?
You should brush your implants properly at least twice a day. You can get information about effective brushing techniques from your doctor.
It is helpful to use an interdental brush or dental floss to remove food debris that has built up between the teeth and around the implant.
You can use mouthwash or a water flosser to keep your mouth clean.
Do implants carry a risk of allergy or cancer?
Implants are not likely to cause allergies or cancer.
Do regular medicines have to be stopped before the implant operation?
Before the implant operation, you may need to stop taking some of your regular medicines for a few days under your doctor's supervision. For this reason, it is beneficial for your doctor and your dentist to be in contact before the operation.
Can implant-supported prostheses be replaced?
Implant-supported prostheses can of course be renewed. During renewal, the implants placed earlier (the screwed part) stay in the mouth, and only the prostheses fitted onto the implant are renewed. Implant-supported prostheses have a lifespan like other prostheses. You can extend the life of your prostheses by taking care over their maintenance and your oral hygiene.
Can dental implants be recommended for smokers?
Smoking and drinking alcohol lengthen the recovery period after implant operations and complicate the process. For this reason, we ask our patients to stay away from tobacco and alcohol, at least during the recovery period.
Do you have to go without teeth during the healing and waiting period after the implant operation?
Our patients do not have to spend this period without teeth.
After the implant operation, we make temporary prostheses for our patients for the waiting period until the final prostheses are made.
How soon after the operation can you return to social life?
You can return to your normal life immediately after the implant operation.
