Tooth extraction is the last thing to consider in dentistry today, yet people tend to have a tooth pulled at the first sign of pain. Teeth are extracted for various reasons, but most often at the patient's insistence. People think that teeth with an abscess, large cavities or severe pain must be extracted immediately. It is very hard to convince a patient that their teeth can be saved with root canal treatment or a filling. Sometimes, because of the insistence of an unconvinced patient, a tooth that could stay in the mouth for years is extracted. Deciding on a tooth extraction is very difficult for a dentist. We also advise you not to give up on your teeth easily. In the end, if you do have to have a tooth extracted, there are certain points you need to look out for:

  1. After the extraction, bite firmly on the gauze pad placed by the dentist over the extraction site for 20 to 25 minutes. The pad stops the bleeding in the socket and allows a blood clot to form, which will allow healthy healing. If you change the pad frequently, you will prevent the clot from forming. The clot will close the socket like a natural dressing and prepare the space to be filled with bone later.
  2. If there is pain after the extraction, you should take a painkiller other than aspirin. Aspirin can trigger bleeding and prevent clotting because of its blood-thinning action. When the numbness starts to wear off, there may be intense pain.
  3. Slight oozing of blood is normal for up to 24 hours after the extraction. Do not panic. If heavy bleeding occurs after the extraction, bite on a clean, sterile pad for half an hour. If the bleeding does not stop and continues with the same intensity, see your doctor.
  4. Do not smoke or drink alcohol for 24 hours after the extraction. These prevent the clot from forming or staying in place properly. If you absolutely must smoke, take one or two puffs to ease the craving, without drawing or inhaling too deeply and while biting down on your teeth. Do not eat very hot or cold food, because this can break the clot and cause bleeding to start again. After the extraction you should eat and drink lukewarm, soft food.
  5. If the extraction took place under difficult conditions or over a long period, that is, if it was what is called a complicated extraction, it helps to apply an ice pack for 5 to 10 minutes every hour for 8 hours. In this way you can control swelling and bruising.
  6. Sometimes the root can break during the extraction. In this case, the doctor decides whether to leave or remove the root depending on its length, the location of the extraction and certain other conditions. Patients should leave the decision to the doctor. It may be necessary to leave the root after the necessary treatment and remove it 2 to 3 months later, or in some cases to leave the root altogether. In any case, you may face more dangerous consequences if you pressure the doctor into removing the roots in an effort to have everything taken out. If you trust your doctor, let them make the decisions when complications arise.
  7. After a tooth has been extracted, do not interfere with the extraction site using your tongue or any other object, and do not hinder the healing of the wound. Because the tooth sits inside the bone, patients try to pull out and probe the bone that emerges after the extraction, assuming it is a root. If a root has been left behind, your doctor will tell you. Look at your tooth after the extraction to be sure, but please do not take the little ball of tissue at its tip home with you. Even when patients see intact roots, they try to explore the bone with their tongue at home, which disrupts wound healing. Please be careful about this.
  8. Pain on the day of the extraction is normal, as is pain in the following days that can be relieved with mild painkillers, depending on how the extraction went. However, intense pain that starts in the days after the extraction, wakes you at night, does not stop despite painkillers and feels as if the tooth had not been extracted indicates that the wound area is infected, that the clot has come away, and so on. In this case a doctor must be consulted, and the necessary dressing and treatment must be provided. You will feel relief immediately when your doctor places the necessary dressing in your mouth and gives you antibiotics, painkillers and the mouthwash needed for oral hygiene.
