If there is one point on which dentists agree, it is this: brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day is the most effective step you can take for oral health. Both electric and manual toothbrushes are effective at removing plaque and the bacteria that cause tooth decay.

Advantages of electric toothbrushes

The bristles of an electric toothbrush vibrate or rotate to help remove plaque build-up from your teeth and gums. The vibration allows more areas to be cleaned each time you move your toothbrush over your teeth.

Studies have shown that electric toothbrushes reduce plaque and gum inflammation more than manual toothbrushes. Plaque fell by 21 per cent and gum inflammation by 11 per cent after three months of use.

Electric toothbrushes do most of the work for you. They can be helpful for anyone with limited mobility.

The built-in timer on an electric toothbrush can help you brush for long enough to remove plaque from your teeth and gums.

When it is time to replace your toothbrush, you only need to replace the head of the electric toothbrush.

Electric toothbrushes are especially useful for people undergoing orthodontic treatment, such as braces, because they make brushing easier and can easily clean between the teeth.

Not all children are interested in brushing their teeth. If an electric toothbrush is more exciting for your child, it can help you maintain oral hygiene and establish healthy habits.

When used correctly, an electric toothbrush will not harm the gums or tooth enamel.

Disadvantages of electric toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes are more expensive than manual ones.

It is not always easy to find the right replacement brush heads. Not all shops may stock the right brand and head model for the electric toothbrush you use. Especially after a certain length of time, when new models appear, it may be difficult to find the head for your old model. To avoid this, you can stock up when you find the head that suits you. However, this also increases the cost.

If more than one person in the household shares the same electric toothbrush, each must use their own head, and if you take it with you when travelling, your family will need to buy a manual toothbrush.

Not everyone may like the sensation of vibration. Electric toothbrushes can also cause more saliva to be produced in your mouth. This may be annoying for some people.

Advantages of manual toothbrushes

Manual toothbrushes have been around for a long time. They do not have the stimulating sounds and vibrations found in many electric toothbrushes. But they are still an effective tool for cleaning your teeth and preventing gum inflammation.

If you have not had any difficulties using a manual toothbrush, you can carry on using it twice a day, as long as you are sure you are using it correctly and effectively.

You can get manual toothbrushes from almost any grocery shop, petrol station or pharmacy. They do not need charging in order to work. So you can use a manual toothbrush anywhere, at any time.

Manual toothbrushes are cost-effective.

Disadvantages of manual toothbrushes

Studies have found that people are more likely to brush their teeth hard when using a manual toothbrush. Brushing too hard may damage your gums and teeth.

When using a manual toothbrush, it can be hard to know whether you are brushing for long enough. Consider putting a kitchen timer or a two-minute hourglass in your bathroom to time your brushing sessions.

Both electric and manual toothbrushes are effective at cleaning teeth if you use the right technique and brush for long enough. If you have questions about which toothbrush is right for you, talk to your dentist.
