Where dental implant treatment is needed, we know that many patients first feel afraid. However, implant treatment is not as difficult and painful as you might think. Placing the implant under local anaesthetic does not cause the patient pain. If you have missing teeth in your mouth or you use a removable full denture, you can consider implant treatment.

We have prepared below the 10 most frequently asked questions and answers about dental implant treatment.

1. What Is a Dental Implant and How Does It Work?

Dental implants are titanium structures in the form of screws or roots, which serve to replace missing teeth and are intended to make the bone around the implant heal and accept it as part of itself. In addition, implants help the teeth to chew better by creating a solid jaw structure. Dental implants offer the results closest to natural teeth in terms of aesthetics and provide a lasting solution.

2. Is Dental Implant Surgery Painful?

Local anaesthetic is applied during dental implant surgery, so you generally feel little or no pain. Anaesthesia is a method used to block pain.

However, a slight feeling of discomfort or pain after implant surgery is normal. You may feel slight swelling, bruising or tenderness for a few days after the procedure. These conditions generally go away quickly and can usually be controlled with prescribed painkillers or painkillers taken by mouth.

3. How Long Does a Dental Implant Last?

The lifespan of dental implants can vary depending on a number of factors. With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, dental implants can last many years and even a lifetime. In general, dental implants that are well placed and regularly maintained should have a long lifespan. Your dentist can assess the health and durability of your implants and give you a specific prediction.

4. What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

The success rates of dental implants vary depending on the area of the jaw where they are placed. Turkey is one of the countries with the highest success rate among European countries. In Turkey, the success rate of dental implants generally reaches 98%. With proper care, you can use implants for life. Dental implant failure is generally seen within the first 6 months. The most important factor affecting long-term success is the patient's failure to provide the necessary care in line with the instructions, not attending regular check-ups, and neglect. Other factors affecting success are the amount of horizontal and vertical bone, the condition and quality of the bone, systemic conditions affecting the patient's recovery, alcohol and tobacco use, and teeth-clenching problems. These problems are avoided through good assessment and good planning.

5. Who Are Suitable Candidates for Implant Surgery?

Dental implant treatment is a popular option for people who are missing one or more teeth and who want a lasting, natural-looking solution. Implant treatment may be suitable for people with good oral and general health, sufficient jawbone density and healthy gum tissue.
In some cases, additional procedures such as a bone graft or treatment of gum disease may be needed to prepare the mouth for implant placement. Non-smokers, or people who want to stop smoking during implant treatment, can also be good candidates.

To determine whether implant treatment is right for you, it is best to schedule a consultation with a qualified dentist who can assess your individual needs and recommend the most suitable treatment plan.

6. Is There an Age Limit for Implant Surgery?

Bone development is complete at around 15 to 16 in girls and at around 17 to 18 in boys. In relation to bone development, the basic age limit for dental implant treatment is 18 on average. Dental implant placement has no upper age limit. Even in very elderly people, there is no drawback to carrying out implant treatment.

There is no harm in applying implant treatment to patients in good general health who have sufficient jawbone structure and whose bone development is complete. However, systemic disorders that may occur at this age or earlier can cause difficulties in carrying out implant surgery.

7. How Long Does the Dental Implant Process Take?

The implant operation is carried out by our specialist dentists with the most suitable planning for the patient. Before the operation, the teeth and jaw are numbed with a local anaesthetic. With suitable surgical instruments, the sockets where the implant will be placed are opened and the implant is placed in these sockets. In the implant process, an incision is made in the gum area, and the bone is reached and the implant screwed in. After the implant is placed, the operation area is sutured. The whole process can take up to 3 months, depending on the patient and the number of implants to be placed. The implant, which takes about 15 to 40 minutes to insert, is expected to fuse with the jawbone, and then the dental prosthesis is completed with the crown.

8. What Is the Recovery Process After Implant Surgery?

After implant treatment, the healing process may involve slight swelling that lasts a few days, pain that can be controlled with simple painkillers, and sometimes bruising. When you take the medication your doctor recommends regularly, you will get through this process quite easily. In about 7 to 10 days, the edges of the wound heal completely by fusing together. If procedures such as grafting with bone powder or a sinus lift were carried out at the same time as the implant, the swelling and discomfort may be a little greater. The stitches are removed within about 7 to 10 days after the surgery.

9. What Materials Are Used for Implant Surgery?

The implant is made from titanium or its alloys. It is not affected by oral fluids and is designed to withstand the forces that will occur in the mouth. Coating the titanium with certain special substances improves its compatibility with tissue and shortens the healing time.

10. What Does Implant Surgery Cost and Is It Covered by Insurance?

The prices of implant surgery vary depending on the treatment to be applied, the brand of the implant and the condition of the bone level. Your doctor will prepare the most accurate price for you. Implants are not covered by insurance in many countries. However, when you have implant treatment in Turkey, you already pay 60% less compared with your own country.
